In June 2012 I was asked to be a part of the judge panel at Miss Kurdistan Beauty Pageant in Erbil, Iraq.
The ‘Hala Erbil’ festival hosted by SNR of Lebanon with the assistance of the Department of Tourism has begun work since early June 2012. It is decided that it will continue until the first week of July until the 30 participants of the contest can be eliminated until one winner remains.
On the 28th of June, there will be a special festival in Erbil Rotana in which, for the first time in Kurdistan, the crown of beauty queen will be given to the winner of the contest. This will be done with the presence of the Polish beauty queen. – Kurdish magazine announced.
As this is the first time such a festival was held in Kurdistan, one of the important factors which has become questioned by the public of Kurdistan and the contestants of the beauty pageant is the clothing of choice for the contestants and whether it is like the clothing used in global pageants.
The Minister of Business in the Department of Tourism says that the most overlooked factor in this process is that it must show respect to Kurdish culture and folklore and isn’t necessarily like the global beauty contests in that regard. The contestants would be wearing Kurdish clothing which they will choose themselves, and the clothing they pick in later stages would also be somewhat linked to Kurdish culture.
I was responsible for organizing the castings and preparing the girls for the stage appearance. They were provided with lessons on how to act and perform similarly to how lessons are provided in the global pageants. We also teach them on everything from what to wear, how to smile so that when they are competing, they will all be beauty queens.
There were several judges apart from me including members of Kurdish government, actor Yusef al-Khal, singer Dina Hayek, doctor Nader Saab and designer Sayed Chahine.
SNR company invited media from all over the world like Reuters, Agence France Presse, Huffington Post to name a few.
As a Beauty Queen from Poland I represented SNR company in front of the media and did most of the interviews.
Polish Beauty Queen at Pageant in Erbil – The beauty queen of Poland elects the beauty queen of Kurdistan.
Women must have a high level of knowledge and understanding, they must be aware of what is happening in the world. This pageant isn’t only about beauty, as beauty may disappear in the period of two years; instead, it is important to be forward-thinking. On top of this, it is vital to be approachable and talkative, have good relations with people so that people support and stand by them during the pageant contest.
The girls didn’t know till last minute I’ll be one of the judges. But after three weeks of preparations I shared with them one secret – when the show starts, they go to the stage and the lights will blind them – they will forget amost everything what I have teached them. So I told them to remember one thing – no matter what happens put your best smile, keep your head up and walk like it’s the best day of your life. For me you’re already a star.
